"It’s a Bird, it’s a Plane, it’s a Drone!": The Future of Site Inspections

This webinar will showcase current ongoing research focused on using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for conducting site inspections applications. The study, being conducted by Auburn University researchers, focuses on erosion and sediment control applications in construction. Participants will be exposed to UAV technologies to develop: project progression documentation, photogrammetric site visualization, highly detailed digital elevation models, and assessment of vegetation and crop health. Developed inspection methods, case study site assessments, and preliminary research findings and results will be discussed. The webinar will cover topics geared towards conducting inspections for construction, infrastructure, environmental, and agricultural applications.

99% Sediment Yield in Two Easy Steps

This case study will present the interesting details of a particular operation on a specific interstate project. However, the approach to the work and the lessons learned will be even more impactful and are applicable to any land disturbing activity where water quality is a priority. Discussions of effectiveness versus compliance and connection between our responsibilities and our organization’s mission will serve as a backdrop for the more technical details of the story. Participants will see RUSLE in a new light and will appreciate just how ineffective sediment control can be, when it becomes the main focus of our efforts.

Advanced Turbidity Treatment Systems

Advanced Treatment Systems or ATS has proven effective for turbidity control for several years. While all agencies are not in universal agreement on the elements of ATS or the regulations for the use of ATS this webinar introduces the required elements for successful monitoring and treatment of construction site runoff for both turbidity and pH control. ATS can involve chemical flocculation, electrocoagulation, filtration and gravity settling. This seminar will follow and build upon the flocculation presentations of Dr. Richard McLaughlin Ph.D. to incorporate the use of automated systems designed to monitor and treat Stormwater using automated chemical dosing and filtration systems to consistently treat construction site discharges to acceptable levels.

Basic Hydrology - Part 1

Knowledge of hydrology is essential for individuals interested in water quality and those involved with land use management activities including erosion and sediment control, designing and reviewing stormwater management plans, as well as local and state regulators and decision makers. This course will describe and discuss the factors that influence stormwater runoff and demonstrate the methodology and procedures to quantify runoff volumes. Precipitation, drainage areas, hydrologic soil groups, land use cover and hydrologic conditions will be explained, through a design example, to convert rainfall to runoff by using USDA-NRCS TR55 hydrologic analyses. Watershed runoff volumes will be calculated.

Biotic Soil Amendments for Site Revegetation

Biotic Soil Amendments, BSA's, have become as cost effective way to successfully re-vegetate sites with poor soils. The erosion control is pretty good at preventing erosion when we do what we know we should, however we still fail all too often at the vegetation establishment goals. BSA's offer a cost effective way to jumpstart the soil building process at the time of seeding to ensure the site will be stable long term. This presentation explores the available BSA's and follows case studies of their effective use on challenging projects.
