Basic Hydrology - Part One & Part Two

Knowledge of hydrology is essential for individuals interested in water quality and those involved with land use management activities including erosion and sediment control, designing and reviewing stormwater management plans, as well as local and state regulators and decision makers. This course will describe and discuss the factors that influence stormwater runoff and demonstrate the methodology and procedures to quantify runoff volumes. Precipitation, drainage areas, hydrologic soil groups, land use cover and hydrologic conditions will be explained, through a design example, to convert rainfall to runoff by using USDA-NRCS TR55 hydrologic analyses. Watershed runoff volumes will be calculated.

Building Green: Atlanta's Green Infrastructure Approach

The City of Atlanta has embraced the use of green infrastructure as a means of combined sewer capacity relief, ecosystem restoration, economic stimulus, and water quality control. In February of 2013, Atlanta adopted one of the most far-reaching stormwater management ordinances in the country.Ê The ordinance helped lay the groundwork for a robust green infrastructure program, both for private development as well as capital improvement projects undertaken by the City.Ê To date, the City has permitted over 2,000 construction projects that utilize green infrastructure to reduce the volume of polluted runoff. ÊIn addition, the City is currently installing the largest permeable paver roadway project in North America - six miles - to help alleviate flooding in neighborhoods served by the City’s combined sewer infrastructure.

Description: This presentation will take an inside look at the 1st edition of CSA/W202, Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection and Monitoring, to showcase how best practices were harmonized to create a national set of minimum requirements. It will highlight the ability of the standard to streamline project administration and eliminate guess work, and how such requirements lend themselves well to incorporation in to contracts and permits. Finally, the presentation will touch on efforts to drive uptake, plans for future ESC standards, as well as the various aspects of CSA/W202 that might serve as a model for future standardization efforts in the U.S. and elsewhere.

Controlling Turbidity: Getting Flocculation to Work on Your Site

While the US EPA has withdrawn its proposed turbidity limit on construction site runoff, there are still many states have or are proposing their own enforcement levels. Construction site owners and managers are also looking for ways to avoid public outcry and potential lawsuits over muddy water leaving their site. In most cases, typical and even more advanced erosion and sediment control practices will not prevent discharges that look like chocolate milk. This two-part seminar will explore the principles behind chemical treatments to rapidly settle suspended solids and reduce turbidity in runoff from construction sites. In the second part, he will then go over a variety of methods to apply those principles to greatly reduce turbidity. After conducting research on this subject for over 10 years in both laboratory and active construction site setting, McLaughlin has a lot of data to back up his recommendations! He will wrap up with a discussion of suggested chain of command options to avoid failures.
