Technical Design and Construction for Construction Field Personnel

This pre-recorded webinar is designed to give field construction personnel a basic understanding of the Best Management Practices that are commonly used to control and reduce erosion and sedimentation from storm water runoff on construction sites. The proper use and placement of BMPs, along with the critical details of construction will be presented. In addition, the webinar will address the administrative aspects of the NPDES (and state issued) permit process that must be performed in the field. These processes include proper inspection and record keeping, and maintenance and control of documents that are required to be kept on site. This webinar is targeted to all levels of field personnel expertise. Junior level field mangers will derive a basic knowledge of the NPDES requirements, while more experienced field managers will receive instruction that will allow them to better analyze the erosion and sedimentation control design for a project and make them a more effective “last check” on each project’s compliance with the DPDES, or state issued permit.

Testing and Specifying Rolled Erosion Control Products

This technical presentation will cover the testing and specifying of Rolled Erosion Control Products based on ASTM standardized test methods. This presentation will describe and recommend test methods that should be used to evaluate Rolled Erosion Control Products for quality, uniformity, and performance. In addition, data will be presented that correlates testing of material properties to field performance characteristics. Attendees will learn of the effort by the National Transportation Product Evaluation Program (NTPEP) to create a nationwide system of testing requirements for Rolled Erosion Control Products, and how this effort has created a knowledge base of data derived from standardized test methods that allows end users, manufacturers, and designers to determine which Rolled Erosion Control Product is appropriate for use on any given construction site.

The Important Role of Vegetation in Stormwater Management

Vegetation is Nature’s best management practice (BMP) for controlling erosion, yet when we discuss BMPs, we are often focused on structural practices that reduce erosion and/or remove sediment. This webinar will focus on the important role that vegetation plays in stormwater management during and after construction and will present new guidance developed in Colorado that covers many fundamentals of successful revegetation and could be adapted to other regions. Dr. Earles will discuss the different hydrologic, physical and biological processes that make vegetation an effective BMP. Students will leave the webinar with a renewed appreciation for vegetation and the key role it plays in effective stormwater management.

Turbidity Control by Chemical Flocculation: Basic Concepts

While the US EPA has withdrawn its proposed turbidity limit on construction site runoff, there are still many states have or are proposing their own enforcement levels. Construction site owners and managers are also looking for ways to avoid public outcry and potential lawsuits over muddy water leaving their site. In most cases, typical and even more advanced erosion and sediment control practices will not prevent discharges that look like chocolate milk. This two-part seminar will explore the principles behind chemical treatments to rapidly settle suspended solids and reduce turbidity in runoff from construction sites. In the first part, McLaughlin will discuss ways to make typical practices work much better and then explore the turbidity problem and how chemical treatment can solve it.

Vegetation ... The Permanent Erosion Control Solution

This course will focus on the use of native plant materials as the primary and long term solution to limiting excessive erosion on large and small scale projects. Participants will be made aware of seed collection techniques and why select seed species may not be available from year-to-year. Participants will learn the major components of effective vegetation planting plan and how to compliment short term erosion control products to fulfill long term vegetation strategies. The Webinar will tie in available planting methods, conservation practices and erosion control materials into successful rehabilitation/restoration outcomes. Multiple case histories will be presented showing the effectiveness of plant materials to minimize the impacts of excessive erosion following disturbances.

Working in Waterways

Projects that involve construction activities in waterways are some of the most challenging ones that engineers and contractors face. These projects often involve obtaining permits from multiple agencies, engineering of temporary diversion measures, and development of strategies for stormwater control measures in what is often a space-constrained environment.
