Stormwater Low Impact Development Practices • Part One & Part Two

Low Impact Development (LID) practices are Best Management Practices (BMPs) developed for managing stormwater runoff from land development sites. LIDs are used (1) to facilitate infiltration of site runoff and (2) to provide treatment of the runoff, thus improving the quality of the runoff entering the local streams and the groundwater. Many LIDs have been developed and are being prescribed by designers and installed by contractors on land development sites. Each has advantages and disadvantages that must be considered if the LID is expected to perform properly. This series will focus on the design and expected function of Bioretention Cells (Rain Gardens) and Green Roofs.

Description: SWM ponds require routine sediment removal in order to maintain stormwater quality and quantity control. Sediments typically contain common urban contaminants (e.g. petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs), polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), road salt, etc.) which trigger non-hazardous waste disposal requirements. Landfill tipping fees can amount to hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars per pond. This webinar presents two recent sediment beneficial use case studies. These studies demonstrate how ecotoxicity tests and risks assessments allowed the sediments to be used as topsoil amendments as cost effective and environmentally sustainable alternatives to landfill disposal. These studies set the precedent for future SWM pond sediment beneficial use projects as well.

Techniques for Effective Beach & Shoreline Stabilization • Part One

Module one discusses the components of the coastal system and explains longshore transport, tidal inlet processes, the causes of erosion and offers a variety of engineering solution to address these problems.
