Stormwater Monitoring: A Primer on Basic Data and Methods

When it rains, water tends to get dirty. Very dirty. This one-hour pre-recorded webinar is a primer on basic water quality monitoring skills, data and resources available to assist with stormwater management efforts. Reference materials are based on a volunteer water quality monitoring program in Iowa, and how its field parameters can be applied to erosion/sediment and stormwater management practices as a method of regular reporting, assessment and analysis of water quality improvement. The act of water quality monitoring and use of data can be applied to all six of the minimum control measures required by the NPDES program. Learn some of the basic steps for gathering data and how it can be applied to each.

Technical Design and Construction for Construction Field Personnel

This pre-recorded webinar is designed to give field construction personnel a basic understanding of the Best Management Practices that are commonly used to control and reduce erosion and sedimentation from storm water runoff on construction sites. The proper use and placement of BMPs, along with the critical details of construction will be presented. In addition, the webinar will address the administrative aspects of the NPDES (and state issued) permit process that must be performed in the field. The variety of techniques and equipment used to construct projects is discussed at length, including locating and analyzing compatible sediment material, which includes grain size, composition, and color, both from offshore and upland areas. Finding and transporting the best sediment material for the appropriate beach and dune system is a major focal point.

This technical presentation will cover the testing and specifying of Rolled Erosion Control Products based on ASTM standardized test methods. This presentation will describe and recommend test methods that should be used to evaluate Rolled Erosion Control Products for quality, uniformity, and performance. In addition, data will be presented that correlates testing of material properties to field performance characteristics. Attendees will learn of the effort by the National Transportation Product Evaluation Program (NTPEP) to create a nationwide system of testing requirements for Rolled Erosion Control Products, and how this effort has created a knowledge base of data derived from standardized test methods that allows end users, manufacturers, and designers to determine which Rolled Erosion Control Product is appropriate for use on any given construction site.

The REVISED UNIVERSAL SOIL LOSS EQUATION (RUSLE) Version 2 - Part One

This is the first of a three part series on RUSLE Version 2. In this first module, we’ll be taking a look at the Essentials of Soil Loss Prediction. At the end of the module you’ll be able to define soil erosion and the types of soil erosion, as well as have a good understanding of the erosion process and why soilerosion is a concern. This understanding will be supported by a brief history of the prediction model and use of the erosion predictive tool. To access RUSLE2 please visit the NRCS RUSLE2 website(http://fargo.nserl.purdue.edu/RUSLE2_ftp/RUSLE2_Program_File/ ) since it also has the climate and soils data for the entire US and territories in other folders on this site. The installer file to download is: “Rusle2InstallerNRCS(2.5.2.11)b2014” This version is subject to updating from time to time, but this version is fairly current from August of 2014. The RUSLE2 installer comes with the base database for agriculture, but does have one user screen template for construction sites. Of course, you don’t get all the custom database or screen and printing enhancements for construction sites.
