Polymers for Construction Site Erosion and Sediment Control

This course has been developed to familiarize participants with the concepts of polymers and how they can be used for Erosion and Sediment Control (ESC) on construction sites. The course is intended for developers, consultants, municipalities, landowners or anyone looking to learn about polymers and apply them for ESC. This course consists of six modules that discuss the basic concepts of polymers, soil stabilization with anionic polyacrylamide (PAM), PAM based stormwater clarification applications, additional PAM enhanced sediment controls, PAM assisted pond dredging, and anionic PAM application guidance for urban construction.

Post-Wildfire Remediation on Federal Lands

The wildfires of 2017 were monumental in their expanse, severity and cost to suppress- and the damage doesn't always end when the fire is put out. Loss of vegetation and fire-induced water repellent soils can trigger increased runoff which causes erosion, flooding or debris flows many miles downstream of the fire. This presentation will provide an overview of the effects of wildfires on natural resources and describe the post-fire emergency response (BAER) program implemented by the Forest Service and other federal land management agencies. Typical emergency response actions and treatment examples will be described along with examples of longer-term post fire remediation needs and costs.

Rain Water Harvesting: Applications and Maintenance

As pressure mounts on domestic water supplies and stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces becomes more of a problem, rain water harvesting can lessen pressure on water supplies and reduce stormwater runoff. Rain water harvesting has been used for centuries. In ancient Rome and Byzantium water was stored in huge underground cisterns to help walled citied withstand sieges. In climates with alternating wet and dry seasons water can be stored in cisterns to provide supply in the dry season. Rainwater harvesting can provide economical irrigation water as well as non-potable water for domestic toilet flushing, clothes washing, and car washing if plumbing codes allow.

RAPPS (E&SC) for Oil and Gas Operations

This webinar will focus on reasonable and prudent practices for stabilization of construction activities associated with the oil and gas industry. RAPPS may not be a common acronym for erosion and sediment control practitioners outside of this energy sector’s operations but these “reasonable and prudent practices for stabilization” encompass the world of BMPs for this industry. Important operational, supplemental, and specialty RAPPs will be covered as well as introducing innovative RAPPs that can be used on your next project. RAPPS selection tools will be reviewed that assist the site supervisor in managing the site for protection of sensitive environmental resources and adjacent properties.

Sampling and Analysis for Meeting Compliance Requirements

Stormwater discharge monitoring has changed over the years, and the visual chocolate vs. vanilla observations have been ramped up to collection and testing of the water to see if meets certain discharge criteria. Most of the sampling requirements stem around turbidity, but there are other constituents (potential pollutants) of concern that may come into play depending upon the construction activities at the time of a rain event. It is important to understand how to collect, handle, store, and test samples to ensure that the results from the testing are defendable. This course will provide information to help prepare the person collecting the samples how to prevent contamination of the samples, understand the equipment and procedures for field testing, and how to document and handle samples that will require lab testing.

Soil Health and Erosion Control

Today, more than ever, we understand the importance of soil health. Soil health is quickly becoming a topic of international concern. Internationally, lack of soil health negatively effects the quality of life in many countries due to reduced food production, decreased water quality, and increased soil erosion issues. The effects of poor soil health can be lessened or eliminated through education, awareness, and ultimately the adoption of Soil Health Best Management Practices (BMP). In this webinar, Rhett K. Kerby, M.S. will offer real world examples of soil health identifiers and discuss how Soil Health BMPs can be implemented to improve soil health and reduce erosion.

Specifying Erosion and Sediment Control Practices

This webinar is a combination of basic construction specifications training and information specific to E&SC. The SWPPP, the NPDES Permit and the EPA or State regulations are not construction specifications. This course includes three modules: The Specifications and the SWPPP; Making CSI Practices Work for Erosion and Sediment Control; Improved E&SC Work through Better E&SC Specifications.
