Maintenance of Permanent Best Management Practices (BMPs)

As more permanent stormwater best management practices (BMPs) are being installed across the nation, performing ongoing maintenance has been a challenge. Permanent stormwater BMPs are now required in most urban developments across the country and it is crucial that these BMPs be maintained correctly. All permanent stormwater BMPs require regular maintenance to remain operating as designed. Maintenance has been neglected in the past due to a failure to understand who is responsible for maintenance, failure to budget for maintenance, and from a lack of knowledge on appropriate maintenance practices. In this webinar, we teach participants to recognize permanent stormwater BMPs in the field, identify maintenance needs and activities, and to perform maintenance correctly. This webinar will provide attendees a broad introduction to the needs and application of permanent stormwater BMP maintenance.

MS4 Audit Preparation

Do you work for a regulated NPDES Phase I or Phase II MS4 entity? Are EPA and/or your state permitting authority gearing up to audit, evaluate, or re-evaluate local MS4 programs in your area? If so, this webinar will assist you with your audit preparations. Even if an audit is not looming in your immediate future, this webinar will provide helpful tips so that you’re always ready to do your best to demonstrate permit compliance. Examples of how MS4 communities have been audited and what tools they have used to successfully survive those audits will be presented. Audit preparations can also be used to help enhance other MS4 program areas so we will highlight those connections. Key elements of audit preparation include knowing what inspectors are looking for and how MS4 communities are being compared to each other. So take a tip from the Boy Scouts and “Be Prepared”!

Municipal Good Housekeeping Effectiveness Utilizing Facility

Meeting MS4 Program compliance requirements for Good housekeeping & Pollution Prevention can be difficult without a well-executed plan. Conducting Municipal Facility “Hot Spot” Assessments to properly identify facility exposure to pollutant runoff risk is an effective starting point for any regulated MS4. For facilities identified as “Hot Spots”, Facility Runoff Control Plans (FRCP) can one tool used by MS4s to comply with these requirements. J.B. Dixon and Allison Sambol of Felsburg, Holt & Ullevig will discuss the genesis of the FRCP approach, and how it has been successfully implemented in several Midwest large and small MS4s. Kent Holm, Environmental Coordinator with Douglas County, Nebraska, will share his MS4 program’s successful approach to municipal facility good housekeeping by implementing FRCPs in the most populated county in Nebraska.

Natural Gas Pipelines

Linear projects, especially natural gas pipelines, present many unique construction and restoration challenges. Additional constraints such as environmental conditions, cultural resources, threatened and endangered species, property owner agreements, right of way access, waterbodies, road crossings and Town/County/State Boundaries further compound the project design, pipeline location and existing resources effected. This workshop presents several examples of linear construction and common problems associated with pipeline construction and restoration. These examples will be followed by creative solutions and out of the box thinking that have yielded successful restoration and compliant results for multiple projects.

Permeable Pavement Design and Construction

Stormwater drainage technology has evolved to the point where it is now possible to create permeable pavements that allow stormwater drainage to occur almost immediately. The benefits to permeable pavements include having rainwater drain directly into soil, decreasing urban heating, and reducing overall stormwater runoff. This concept is gaining acceptance through studies conducted in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. This webinar focuses on what constitutes permeable pavement, design tools and methodologies in designing permeable pavement, the structural and hydrological capacities, and design traffic characterization.
