"It’s a Bird, it’s a Plane, it’s a Drone!": The Future of Site Inspections

This webinar will showcase current ongoing research focused on using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for conducting site inspections applications. The study, being conducted by Auburn University researchers, focuses on erosion and sediment control applications in construction. Participants will be exposed to UAV technologies to develop: project progression documentation, photogrammetric site visualization, highly detailed digital elevation models, and assessment of vegetation and crop health. Developed inspection methods, case study site assessments, and preliminary research findings and results will be discussed. The webinar will cover topics geared towards conducting inspections for construction, infrastructure, environmental, and agricultural applications.

99% Sediment Yield in Two Easy Steps

This case study will present the interesting details of a particular operation on a specific interstate project. However, the approach to the work and the lessons learned will be even more impactful and are applicable to any land disturbing activity where water quality is a priority. Discussions of effectiveness versus compliance and connection between our responsibilities and our organization’s mission will serve as a backdrop for the more technical details of the story. Participants will see RUSLE in a new light and will appreciate just how ineffective sediment control can be, when it becomes the main focus of our efforts.

Are you prepared for Sea Level Rise? Shoreline Protection

This will be a case study describing local sea-level rise prediction and adaptive planning in Humboldt Bay in Northern California. Sea-level rise along with ocean acidification, seismic hazards, especially tsunamis, are already impacting communities, agriculture, and industries around the Humboldt Bay and climate change adaption is no longer theoretical. Learn about how the first lines of defense, featuring natural area buffers and shoreline protection are being implemented.

Basic Hydrology - Part 2

This course will take participants through the evaluation and determination of the parameters for the time of concentration for a watershed and its application in determining the peak rate of runoff for different storm frequencies in the watershed. The USDA-NRCS unit hydrograph use will be explained and its use to calculate the peak discharge will be demonstrated through a design example. Comparison of pre-developed and post-developed discharges will be made for estimating stormwater detention basin sizing. CISEC Module 1: EPA Rules and Regulations

The purpose of this module is to ensure inspectors understand EPA and the Clean Water Act (CWA) requirements and how they are applicable to inspections. Participants will evaluate EPA’s 2012 construction general permit as it applies to the duties of inspectors. Participants will also evaluate SWPPP details so that participants understand what they must do to meet federal compliance criteria.

CISEC Module 3: Inspecting BMPs

This module will provide the necessary tools for inspecting BMPs found on land development, vertical/big box construction, and linear projects. Participants will learn about inspecting installed sediment and erosion control measures, whether the BMPs are functioning in a correct manner, and assess BMP limitations. In addition, information will be provided on inspecting storage areas where potential pollution problems may occur and assessing whether new BMPs need to be added or whether existing structures can be removed.
