Technical Design and Construction for Construction Field Personnel

This pre-recorded webinar is designed to give field construction personnel a basic understanding of the Best Management Practices that are commonly used to control and reduce erosion and sedimentation from storm water runoff on construction sites. The proper use and placement of BMPs, along with the critical details of construction will be presented. In addition, the webinar will address the administrative aspects of the NPDES (and state issued) permit process that must be performed in the field. These processes include proper inspection and record keeping, and maintenance and control of documents that are required to be kept on site. This webinar is targeted to all levels of field personnel expertise. Junior level field mangers will derive a basic knowledge of the NPDES requirements, while more experienced field managers will receive instruction that will allow them to better analyze the erosion and sedimentation control design for a project and make them a more effective “last check” on each project’s compliance with the DPDES, or state issued permit.

Testing and Specifying Rolled Erosion Control Products

This technical presentation will cover the testing and specifying of Rolled Erosion Control Products based on ASTM standardized test methods. This presentation will describe and recommend test methods that should be used to evaluate Rolled Erosion Control Products for quality, uniformity, and performance. In addition, data will be presented that correlates testing of material properties to field performance characteristics. Attendees will learn of the effort by the National Transportation Product Evaluation Program (NTPEP) to create a nationwide system of testing requirements for Rolled Erosion Control Products, and how this effort has created a knowledge base of data derived from standardized test methods that allows end users, manufacturers, and designers to determine which Rolled Erosion Control Product is appropriate for use on any given construction site.

The REVISED UNIVERSAL SOIL LOSS EQUATION (RUSLE) Version 2 - Part One

This is the first of a three part series on RUSLE Version 2. In this first module, we’ll be taking a look at the Essentials of Soil Loss Prediction. At the end of the module you’ll be able to define soil erosion and the types of soil erosion, as well as have a good understanding of the erosion process and why soilerosion is a concern. This understanding will be supported by a brief history of the prediction model and use of the erosion predictive tool. To access RUSLE2 please visit the NRCS RUSLE2 website(http://fargo.nserl.purdue.edu/RUSLE2_ftp/RUSLE2_Program_File/ ) since it also has the climate and soils data for the entire US and territories in other folders on this site. The installer file to download is: “Rusle2InstallerNRCS(2.5.2.11)b2014” This version is subject to updating from time to time, but this version is fairly current from August of 2014. The RUSLE2 installer comes with the base database for agriculture, but does have one user screen template for construction sites. Of course, you don’t get all the custom database or screen and printing enhancements for construction sites. If you are interested in full RUSLE2 training sessions please contact IECA Education at education@ieca.org or 303-640-7554. Thank You!

The REVISED UNIVERSAL SOIL LOSS EQUATION (RUSLE) Version 2 - Part One, Two & Three

In the first of a three part series on RUSLE Version 2. In the second of a three part series of the RUSLE Version 2. In this second module, we will look at the background for developing the RUSLE 2 model and how to apply it for plant development and land use. Also addressed are each factor within the equation and how to use RUSLE 2 as a planning tool. In the third of a three part series of the RUSLE Version 2. In this third and final module we explore the databases behind the model and show how RUSLE 2 software produces soil erosion estimates. Also covered in this module is everything from how the databases are organized to demonstrating the software with examples from real field data. To access RUSLE2 please visit the NRCS RUSLE2 website(http://fargo.nserl.purdue.edu/RUSLE2_ftp/RUSLE2_Program_File/ ) since it also has the climate and soils data for the entire US and territories in other folders on this site. Turbidity Control by Chemical Flocculation: Basic Concepts

While the US EPA has withdrawn its proposed turbidity limit on construction site runoff, there are still many states have or are proposing their own enforcement levels. Construction site owners and managers are also looking for ways to avoid public outcry and potential lawsuits over muddy water leaving their site. In most cases, typical and even more advanced erosion and sediment control practices will not prevent discharges that look like chocolate milk. This two-part seminar will explore the principles behind chemical treatments to rapidly settle suspended solids and reduce turbidity in runoff from construction sites. In the first part, McLaughlin will discuss ways to make typical practices work much better and then explore the turbidity problem and how chemical treatment can solve it.
