This webinar will showcase current ongoing research focused on using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for conducting site inspections applications. The study, being conducted by Auburn University researchers, focuses on erosion and sediment control applications in construction. Participants will be exposed to UAV technologies to develop: project progression documentation, photogrammetric site visualization, highly detailed digital elevation models, and assessment of vegetation and crop health. Developed inspection methods, case study site assessments, and preliminary research findings and results will be discussed. The webinar will cover topics geared towards conducting inspections for construction, infrastructure, environmental, and agricultural applications.

Designing Effective Sediment Basins

This webinar will detail the various components and requirements to develop effective sediment basin designs. The webinar will provide an overview to “SEDspread”, a (FREE) user-friendly spreadsheet-based design tool for designers to appropriately size sediment basin parameters. The workbook allows users to input site specific parameters and constraints to determine: basin capacity and configuration, surface skimmer size and dewatering rate, auxiliary spillway design, and baffle configuration. The workbook includes a summary sheet that provides users with schematics of the designed basin, available as a supplement to facilitate effective communication between designers and contractors for constructing/installing the basin. Ecological Monitoring for Construction

While monitoring and management of protected adjacent wetland features is a common condition of most anthropogenic activity approvals, no standard method for such work currently exists in Canada on a national (or provincial) level. Ecological monitoring methods open vary between sites depending on the preferred methods of the body conducting the work, and/or associated regulatory agencies. Consequently, the absence of standardization for ecological monitoring results in wide-ranging interpretation, development, implementation and quality of monitoring plans which in turn creates a “grey area” when it comes to consistency, compliance and accountability. Evaluation of Inlet Protection Practices using Large-Scale Testing Techniques

This technical presentation will showcase current ongoing research and large-scale testing efforts focused on improving existing storm drain inlet protection practices. The study, being conducted at the Auburn University Erosion and Sediment Control Testing Facility (AU-ESCTF), includes the investigation of typical roadway median inlet protection practices (i.e., aggregate barriers, sand bag barriers, silt fence barriers, wattle barriers, and manufactured practices) for protecting drop inlets during construction activities. Effective inlet protection practice needs, developed testing procedures, data collection practices, performance characteristics, and results will be discussed.
